“He is my father,” Pierre, a middle-aged patient says as he points to Wilflo Fontus, his visibly younger social worker at St. Luke Hospital, “he is my brother; my friend.” Pierre was left at the hospital, abandoned by his family. There was no relative willing to bring him food, clothing, or medicine until the social services team, consisting of Wilflo, Rachelle Petiote, and Yolette Senat, stepped in. These three become like family to their most vulnerable patients.

The Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist

On 18 October 2018 the St. Luke Foundation celebrated the feast of its patron saint, St. Luke the Evangelist. The day started with a celebratory mass lead by Fr Rick and Fr Hugo. Red and white balloons, flowers, and large decorative hats, decked the chapel at the St. Luke Hospital and the joyful singing of a dozen men accompanied by a keyboard and conga drum filled the church. During the mass, Fr Rick shared about St. Luke the Evangelist—how he was a physician, historian, painter of icons, whose Gospel is centered on God’s mercy,  care for the poor, the importance of a joyful spirit and deep prayerfulness--a gospel where salvation is meant for all people.

GSD Healthcare: Building St. Luke Hospital's Trauma Care Capacity

Since the earthquake in 2010, various international organizations throughout Port au Prince have provided trauma expertise for burns, accidents, high-risk maternity and various other emergencies. Some of these trauma centers were located just a few miles from St. Damien and St. Luke hospitals. Unfortunately, at the end of July of this year, one organization announced the closing of two of their hospitals, cutting back funding to maternity and trauma services, with trauma being closed altogether after June of 2019.

Republican Senator Robert Phillips Corker from Tennessee visits St. Luke Hospital on June 1st, 2018

Fr. Rick together with Dr. Augustin, Dr. Colas and two other people from the medical team of St. Luke  hospital were happy to welcome the senator along with the USAID staff and the representative of UNICEF and other members.The visit was guided by Dr. Augustin the medical director of the St. Luke Foundation. The new project is supporting safe water and sanitation for Haiti to continue fighting against Cholera.
