Restoring Dignity in Haiti, A Visit from GSD Healthcare Inc.

After receiving treatment at Mayo Clinic Arizona, Fr. Rick, knowing that many people in Haiti could also benefit from his same procedure, suggested to Dr. Patel and Dr. Humphreys to find a way to bring that kind of care to the men of Haiti. Elderly men are often a neglected population within this country. They don’t generate a lot of aid; they are not cute and marketable, like babies and young children. With little aid for this demographic, these men are often left to live for years with catheters, some even unable to work and care for their families because of difficulties and challenges that come with incontinence.  With this knowledge, Dr. Patel and Dr. Humphreys set out to restore dignity to men in Haiti, and the group GSD was birthed.

At the beginning of December, the St. Luke Foundation had the pleasure of receiving a visit from our long time friends and partners, Mariavittoria Rava, Dr. Enrico Casano, and Donatella Dipaolo, from the Rava Foundation in Italy. Dr. Casano has been an integral part of our breast cancer screening program that we began with the Rava Foundation’s help at the beginning of 2017. Since the start of the program, we have been able to screen over 2,000 women!

GSD Healthcare: Building St. Luke Hospital's Trauma Care Capacity

Since the earthquake in 2010, various international organizations throughout Port au Prince have provided trauma expertise for burns, accidents, high-risk maternity and various other emergencies. Some of these trauma centers were located just a few miles from St. Damien and St. Luke hospitals. Unfortunately, at the end of July of this year, one organization announced the closing of two of their hospitals, cutting back funding to maternity and trauma services, with trauma being closed altogether after June of 2019.

The Visit of the new Archbishop of Port au Prince

Today we are very honored and blessed to receive the visit of the new Archbishop of Port-au-Prince, Max Leroy Mésidor, who was appointed by Pope Francis three months ago, to replace our good friend Archbishop Guire Poulard.

The archbishop said when he first came to Port-au-Prince, he had a list of places that he would like to visit in the city and he wrote them on his agenda; he has heard a lot about both Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs and the St. Luke Foundation and for sure we were figured on his list.

Voices of Haiti in Miami, with the Andrea Bocelli Foundation

They have collected standing ovations everywhere, they have been the soundtrack of the “Lincoln Center Global Exchange”, they have sung at The United Nations for the royal family of Sweden, at the Teatro del Silenzio and for the Pope.

Through their performances they have, once again, given evidence of how art can be a powerful instrument of cooperation, a tool for the development of one’s own potential and an instrument to show the strength, the colors, and the positivity of a land.

In the heart of Miami, in the prestigious Frost School at the Miami University, the kids of the choir “Voices of Haiti” have been the stars of an exciting meeting with the students, a musical meeting where the singers have reciprocally sung for one another.

Happy Birthday Fr. Rick!

You have a limited number of heartbeats in your life; it is a finite number. And you have a limited number of steps you’re going to take in your life; it’s a finite number and it can be calculated. The question is, what is your heart beating for and where are your steps taking you?
— Fr. Rick Frechette

On August 14th, our beloved friend Father Rick Frechette will turn 64 years old.

Anyone who has been lucky enough to meet Father Rick is inspired by him. This is a man with an extraordinary commitment to peace, justice, and service – and we believe he deserves to be celebrated.

In honor of Father Rick, his team, and all the St. Luke Foundation has built to serve the poorest of the poor in Haiti, please join us in celebrating 64 remarkable years.

The best part? Your generosity will be put to good use. All donations will benefit the amazing work of Father Rick and the St. Luke Foundation for Haiti, whose programs include 32 schools with 12,500+ students enrolled, high-quality healthcare for 60,000 patients each year, and community outreach programs that deliver 19,500 gallons of clean water every day.

Let’s use this opportunity to show our solidarity and give Father Rick and his team the gift of our continued love, appreciation, and much-needed financial support! Happy Birthday Father Rick!
