St Luke Hospital-Haiti Cholera

It is heart-wrenching to witness the devastating impact of the recent flood and earthquake that hit the southern part of Haiti on June 3rd. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the victims. We are working on how we can stand with them in them solidarity to deal with the consequences of the deadly floods and the upsurge of cholera cases throughout the country. According to an article published on 06 of June 2023 by the newspaper Le Nouvelliste, more than ten (10) deaths from cholera have been confirmed at Jacmel. Moreover, 405 suspected cases, 69 confirmed cases and 15 deaths was registered in north-east and 80 hospitalization cases in two weeks in the central department. https://lenouvelliste.com/article/242726/cholera-a-jacmel-plus-de-dix-morts-en-six-jours

This upsurge of Cholera strongly hit Port-au-Prince where our hospital represent 60% of the beds available for Cholera treatment. As a matter of fact, our hospital receives more and more referrals from other Hospitals like Doctors without Borders, CAN, etc...

The St Luke hospital CTC has never closed between January 2023 and the present moment.  We received 500 patients suffering from acute dehydration due to cholera. Over the past weeks we have noticed a huge upsurge of Cholera cases at the St Luke Hospital. After the flood, from June 1st until June 10th we have already received 100 patients suffering from cholera. The suspected cases are referred to St Luke Hospital because many of the CTC established from the beginning of the pandemic are no longer functional. In fact, the number of cholera cases that we are receiving exceeds our capacity because our financial and materials are limited...

The cost of medicine and supplies for a Cholera dehydrated patient is about US $250 for a 3-5 day course of treatment.   The cost of treatment for 400 patients over the course of a month, with an estimated 14 patients admitted per day, will be $100,000 US.  The rainy season and hurricane season will continue for the next 5 months and we will need about $500,000 soley for Cholera treatments.

We are very grateful for your ongoing support that have made all this possible to help Haitian people. We count on your generous and continuous support to help St Luke Foundation assist the more vulnerable in Haiti.
